Common questions
What can kids practice?
Spelling, Times Tables, Division and Touch Typing. Kids pick a subject from the home screen — nobody hands them a word list. One daily goal is shared across subjects (20 answers out of the box; change it or switch it off under Settings → Daily goal). XP, ranks, badges, themes and the daily streak are shared across all of them. Touch Typing needs a physical keyboard, so it appears in the browser version; the iPhone, iPad and Android apps have Spelling, Times Tables and Division.
How does division work?
The same facts, the other way round. If you get one wrong it shows you the multiplication behind it — 7 times 8 is 56, so 56 divided by 7 is 8 — because that is how the answer is actually worked out, not a new thing to memorise. Ten levels, following a river from The Spring to The Sea.
How do the times tables work?
Kids type each answer on a number pad — no multiple-choice guessing. Miss one and QuillQuest shows the product with a skip-count (like 5, 10, 15…) so it teaches instead of just marking it wrong, and levels climb from the Trailhead to the Summit. Times Tables is silent — the spoken voices are a Spelling feature.
Do you drill the ×0 and ×1 tables?
No — ×0 and ×1 are taught once as a quick warm-up rule (anything ×0 is 0, and ×1 is itself), then the game focuses on the facts that actually take practice.
Does it work offline?
In the apps, yes — the core game plays offline, no internet needed to play. Optional extras (additional voices and the spoken "use it in a sentence" clips) download once from a content host and are then saved on the device.
The browser version needs a connection. The page has to load each time, and it streams the audio clips as it plays them rather than keeping them. Touch Typing is browser-only, so it is the one subject that always needs the network.
No sound in Spelling, or a word won't play aloud?
Audio is the heart of Spelling (Times Tables is silent by design), so start with the device: make sure it isn't on silent — flip the side Ring/Silent switch so no orange is showing — and turn the volume up. You can always tap the speaker to hear a word again, and the read-aloud voice can be changed in Settings.
Does it collect any data?
There is no account, no email and no password, and nothing that identifies your child. Progress, name and avatar stay on the device. If a grown-up switches on syncing, that player's practice progress and their cartoon buddy — never a name, never an age — are stored under an anonymous code so a second device can pick it up. It is off unless you turn it on.
That one feature is why the App Store privacy label reads Data Not Linked to You — User Content rather than Data Not Collected. We would rather show you why than round it down to "nothing". Full detail in the privacy policy.
Will we lose progress after an update or on a new device?
App updates keep all progress. Progress is stored on the device, so by default a brand-new device or deleting the app starts fresh. If you want progress to move between devices, switch on syncing (Settings) on the first device and enter the code it shows on the second.
Can multiple kids share one device?
Yes — each kid gets their own profile, progress, streak and avatar (Settings → Manage players).
Sharing a device? QuillQuest asks who's playing. Once a device has more than one player, every fresh start opens with a "Who's playing?" picker — big buddy pictures, nothing to read or type — so a sibling's round no longer lands on the first child's progress. You can also switch any time from Settings → Manage players. (A device with only one player never sees the question.)
Where can we play it?
On iPhone and iPad, on Android, or in a web browser at quillquest.net. Touch Typing is browser-only, because it needs a real keyboard.
How do I set it up?
Open the app, enter your child's age, and pick a subject to start practicing. There is no sign-up and no login.
Can I turn off the daily goal?
Yes. It starts at 20 answers a day — a soft target, not homework. Change the number, switch it to minutes, or turn it off entirely under Settings → Daily goal.
How do I turn off the daily reminder?
It's off by default. If it was turned on, switch it off under Settings → Reminder.
Is there a cost?
No — free, with no ads and no in-app purchases.
How do I reset progress?
Settings → Reset all progress. That clears that player's progress, and if syncing was on it also deletes their synced save from our server. To remove a player entirely — name, avatar and all — use Settings → Manage players → Edit → Remove player.
